DOUBLE “Strange Things”
Who would’ve thought a deep cut from a Japanese R&B singer’s album would be found and appreciated by people outside of Japan 22 years later after its original release? DOUBLE (Takako) herself might be happily shocked by this surprising surge. Her record label even released a press release regarding a viral hit recently.
Who made “Strange Things”?
To start with, “Strange Things” was produced by DOUBLE and Black Opal from New York. It’s a non-single track of her album “Vision” released in 2002. In 2024, TikTok posts using the song have gone viral and people started to be curious about Japanese R&B, especially in the region of New York and California of the United States. They seem to like the song since it has the real 90’s R&B vibe though it’s sung mostly in Japanese.

Who is DOUBLE?
By the way, who is DOUBLE? DOUBLE was originally a sister duo from Niigata prefecture in Japan and released Japanese R&B classic (prologue) album “Crystal” which contains their hit songs like “Shake” and “Bed”. After Sachiko’s sudden passing, Takako decided to keep the name “DOUBLE” as her stage name and continued her career.
DOUBLE is said to be the queen of Japanese R&B, often stated along with MISIA, Hikaru Utada, SOULHEAD, Toshinobu Kubota, m-flo and others in the genre of Japanese R&B. She later collaborated with the queen of Japanese Hip-Pop Namie Amuro to give birth to the ultimate banger “Black Diamond”. DOUBLE’s contribution to penetrate R&B music into the Japanese music industry is enormous. She definitely is the R&B key player in the game.
Here’s one of the famous TikTok posts which boosted “Strange Things” by DOUBLE.
